The volunteers of Drogheda Tidy Towns are thrilled to announce new sculptures at Southgate, Colpe. Two stunning artworks are now proudly installed: "The Well of Wisdom" and "Boann, Goddess of the Boyne." These magnificent pieces on the Southgate roundabouts create a stunning gateway to Drogheda and the ancient Boyne Valley.
Gerry Leydon, Chairperson of Drogheda Tidy Towns, explains their significance. "Award-winning local artist Breda Marron crafted these pieces," he says. "They are more than just art. They tell captivating stories of our rich local heritage and mythology."
On the north roundabout, "The Well of Wisdom" invites exploration of the legendary Segais Well. This well is a source of sacred knowledge. Its swirling spirals and bird motifs echo the lifeblood of the River Boyne. On the south roundabout, "Boann, Goddess of the Boyne" rises majestically. Her graceful form symbolises the river's timeless journey and the unity of our communities. Her cloak transforms into two embracing swans. This is a powerful symbol of love, and transformation, connecting Drogheda, East Meath, and the wider Boyne Valley.
The immensely talented and award-winning Meath artist, Breda Marron, is celebrated for her thoughtful, site-specific artworks. These include Heart Space and Éirímís - Together We Rise. Her works beautifully connect with nature, folklore, and community. They profoundly enrich spaces and inspire immense local pride.
Speaking this week, Breda said, "It has been an honour to work with Drogheda Tidy Towns to create these pieces. I have been inspired by Boann, the River Boyne, and the wealth of stories and mythology flowing through this landscape .As someone who lives here and passes by every day," she added, "I wanted The Well of Wisdom and Boann, Goddess of the Boyne to reflect the beauty, history, and spirit of our community."
This monumental project is a testament to incredible community spirit and collaboration. It would not have been possible without the immense support of Meath County Council, Meath LEADER through Meath Partnership, and Community Finance Ireland, who provided crucial backing. Drogheda Tidy Towns drove the project, collaborating with local residents and generous businesses including Amazon, Coca-Cola, and The Southgate Management Company.
